How much life insurance do you need?

An interactive calculator walks you through the key factors: how many years of income, debts owed, education funding needs, and what coverage you currently carry.

The standard approach: total what your income supports, then subtract existing protection. Precision isn't required—term policies come in increments anyway, and the aim is a number that sustains your household through the critical years.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Formula: (annual income × years) + debts + education costs − current savings and coverage, rounded to the nearest $5,000 increment. This is a rough estimate, not financial advice.

Why those inputs

Income years. Insurance professionals typically recommend covering ten to twenty years of income; the best choice depends on how long dependents will need financial support. Many Carlsbad families with young children pick the longer range because expenses for child care, housing and schools all peak simultaneously.

Debts. Mortgages represent the biggest debt for most households. Having enough coverage to pay off the mortgage gives survivors the freedom to decide their future without being pushed by monthly payments.

Education. A reasonable estimate per child in current dollars. It's simpler to fold this into your initial policy than to seek additional coverage down the road.

What you have. Any money in savings available for expenses, plus any group life insurance through an employer. Keep in mind that group coverage typically stops if you leave the job, so many people count only a fraction of it.

Once you settle on a target, the quote tool displays costs across 10 to 30-year terms from every carrier. Many buy slightly above the estimate because the extra cost per month is minimal when young.
